Okeson Named Interim Dean of College of Dentistry

University of Kentucky Provost David Blackwell has named Professor Jeffrey Okeson to the position of interim dean of the College of Dentistry. Dr. Okeson has been a full-time faculty member at UK for 45 years. He currently serves as chief of the Division of Orofacial Pain and is the director of the UK Orofacial Pain Clinic, which he founded in 1977. He previously served as chair of the Department of Oral Health Science.

Yeoh Named Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Melvyn Yeoh, DMD, MD, FACS, has been named chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. He will serve a six-year term in this critical leadership role.

Shaddox Named Associate Dean for Research

Dr. Luciana Shaddox has been named associate dean for research at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry (UKCD), effective July 1, 2019.  As associate dean for research, Shaddox will be responsible for providing strategic leadership to help develop and facilitate new research and new research collaborative teams within and outside UKCD. 

Professional Education Preparation Program Offers Taste of Dentistry

The Professional Education Preparation Program (PEPP) offers academic enrichment options for high school graduates who are interested in becoming physicians and dentists to serve communities throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Since the 1980s, PEPP has provided an opportunity for students in underserved Kentucky counties, and minority populations underrepresented in healthcare, to explore a career in medicine or dentistry.

UK Board Awards 16 University Professorships for 2019-20

By: Jenny Wells-Hosley This week, the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees approved 16 University Research Professorships for the 2019-20 academic year. The purpose of the University Research Professorship program is to recognize and publicize research accomplishments of scholars across the full range of disciplines at UK. The award amount is $10,000 for one year, to be used to further the research, scholarship and creative endeavors of the awardee.  

Wethington Awards Program

The College of Dentistry wishes to renew participation in the Wethington Award Program beginning in the current fiscal year. The purpose of this program is to encourage faculty to pursue extramurally funded research and thus contribute to the University of Kentucky’s goal to be a nationally prominent research institution.     Eligibility Criteria:

It is common knowledge that dentists are on the lookout for issues such as cavities and gum disease during dental checkups. However, many do not realize that dentists are also checking for signs of oral cancer. 

One Day for UK

It only takes one day, one gift to make a difference. Join University of Kentucky alumni, friends, and supporters on April 17 for One Day for UK. The giving day will ensure all College of Dentistry students have life-changing opportunities and the best learning experiences possible. On April 17, the College of Dentistry is raising money for the College of Dentistry Scholarship Fund to help address one of the biggest challenges for many dental students, affording their dental education.

Since the 1980s, the Professional Education Preparation Program (PEPP) has provided an opportunity for students in underserved Kentucky counties, and minority populations underrepresented in healthcare, to explore a career in medicine or dentistry. Although funding changes for the program have occurred, leadership in both the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and the College of Medicine support the continuation of this academic enrichment offering at UK. 

Clinic Offers Dental, Medical Exam in One-Stop Visit

Between New Year’s resolutions and many people naturally taking time in the beginning of the year to reflect on areas they may have ignored during the previous year, including personal care, the University of Kentucky Diagnosis, Wellness and Prevention Clinic offers individuals an option to address both their dental and overall health needs.
