A dental education is an expensive undertaking. While the major responsibility for financing a professional education rests with you and your family external agencies, such as the federal government assist student by offering low-cost student loans to supplement family contributions.
Financial aid is only available to cover education-related expenses for the student for one academic year. Reapplication is required for each subsequent year. STEP 1: Begin financing a dental education by tapping the nearest resource, which could be your family. Parents, grandparents, and/or other family members may be in a financial position to help you. If they offer, it is wise to accept their assistance. By reducing your costs, your overall debt will be kept in check.
STEP 2: Look for scholarships. Unfortunately, scholarships at the professional level are not as plentiful as they are at the undergraduate level, but they are out there. Contact civic organizations, your church, your employer or your parent’s employer for opportunities. Fraternities and sororities offer scholarships. There are books at public and college libraries, and internet resources for accessing free scholarship searches. An increasing number of our students are turning to Military scholarships, which are a good investment. For a three- or four- year commitment, you can get a free education. Contact your local recruiter to see what they are offering in the area of health professions.
STEP 3: The last step is to take a look at the federal loan programs. You do have to re-pay loans, but thanks to the federal government, the Unsubsidized Loan Program is available; the fixed interest rate changes every July 1. With the cost of tuition continuing to rise, sometimes the Unsubsidized Loan is not enough to cover your costs. In this case, you may have to rely on Grad Plus Loan, which also has a fixed interest rate that changes on July 1 of every year. This loan is credit based, so if you have bad credit, try to get your credit problems resolved before you apply to dental school. You may have to get a co-signer for this loan.

Undergraduate, graduate, or professional students enrolled in a certificate program are NOT eligible for federal Title IV financial aid funds unless they are concurrently enrolled in a degree program at the University of Kentucky.
You may need to complete items in addition to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). For simplicity, we have gathered these items into one area under the heading of Required Documents, found in the Financial Aid area of your myUK Student Portal. These required documents typically fall into two broad categories known as Eligibility Confirmation and Verification. Your financial aid offer is not finalized without completing these steps.
Students who are new to UK must first setup their linkblue account, as it is required to access their additional items.
No matter your individual situation, our office is here to assist you with navigating through the requirements. If at any time you are confused or find yourself overwhelmed, do not hesitate to contact us.
Verification is the process when federal and state regulations require us to compare the information you reported on the FAFSA with corresponding documentation. If your application is selected for verification, you will be sent an email instructing you to log on to StudentForms to review the additional items and information we need from you. If you have not yet created a StudentForms Account, here is a Step by Step Guide on how to create an account.
We must receive all required documentation before your financial aid can be disbursed (or credited) to your student account. If there are differences between the data you supplied on your FAFSA and the verification documentation you submit, we may be required to send corrections to update and reprocess your FAFSA data, which could affect the amounts and types of financial aid you are eligible to receive.
If selected for verification, your responsibilities are to:
It is extremely important that you respond to requests for information promptly because finalized financial aid offers are processed in the order of file completion date. In the event your financial aid file is not complete by billing deadlines, the student may incur late fees and be responsible for making payment arrangements with the Student Account Services Office.
You will be sent an email directing you to review your revised financial aid awards in your myUK Student Portal if there are any changes as a result of verification.
