Craig S. Miller, D.M.D., M.S., a leading clinician-scientist at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, has been awarded the American Dental Association’s (ADA) prestigious Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research. Presented annually, the award recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to clinical investigations that advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of craniofacial, oral and dental diseases.

Miller currently serves as the Alvin L. Morris Professor of Oral Health Research and the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development at UK Dentistry. Throughout his distinguished career, he has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed scientific articles, abstracts and conference proceedings, as well as more than 50 editorials and commentaries.

A pioneer in oral infectious disease research, Miller was the first to document the recrudescence patterns of all eight human herpesviruses in the oral cavity. His laboratory also provided pivotal evidence identifying the anatomic sites of persistent viral infections involving human papillomavirus (HPV) and John Cunningham virus (JCV)—findings that have shaped the scientific community’s understanding of viral behavior in the oral environment.

In addition, Miller’s work has significantly advanced the field of salivary diagnostics, helping lay the groundwork for noninvasive tools that may improve early disease detection and patient care.

“Dr. Miller’s contributions have had a lasting impact on dentistry and oral medicine,” said Dean Jeffrey Okeson. “His dedication to advancing research and improving clinical practice exemplifies the values of our College and the mission of the University of Kentucky.”

The Norton M. Ross Award is one of the ADA’s highest honors in clinical research, celebrating individuals whose scientific achievements have led to meaningful improvements in patient health and the practice of dentistry nationwide.
