LEXINGTON, Ky. (August 4, 2026) — Mauro Santamaria, D.D.S., Ph.D., M.S., associate professor in the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry Division of Periodontology, has been selected to participate in one of the most prestigious scientific gatherings in the field of periodontology.
Santamaria was invited by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) to serve as an expert participant in the 22nd European Workshop on Periodontology, an invitation-only meeting that brings together internationally recognized researchers and clinicians to develop evidence-based clinical practice guidelines that shape patient care around the world.
The workshop, scheduled for Nov. 8-11 in Segovia, Spain, will focus on the management of gingival recession. Participants were selected through a rigorous academic review based on their scientific contributions to the field. According to the invitation, the organizing committee made "a great effort to choose the best possible experts" and selected Santamaria because of his contributions to the scientific literature.
"This is one of the highest professional honors a periodontist can receive," Santamaria said. "To be invited to help develop international clinical practice guidelines alongside many of the world's leading experts is both humbling and deeply rewarding. These recommendations will help guide clinicians in providing evidence-based care to patients across the globe."
The European Workshops on Periodontology have long been regarded as a cornerstone of evidence-based periodontal care. The workshop proceedings are published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology—the highest-ranked journal in the specialty—and serve as the foundation for internationally recognized clinical guidelines used by practitioners, educators and researchers worldwide.
As part of the workshop, invited experts will review the latest scientific evidence, evaluate systematic reviews and work collaboratively to develop consensus recommendations for the treatment of gingival recession. The resulting clinical practice guideline will help inform treatment decisions and improve patient care internationally.
Santamaria's selection reflects both his internationally recognized scholarship and the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry's growing reputation as a leader in periodontal research, education and clinical excellence.
