University-wide Navigation

For Kaylee Morris and Kara Morris, life has long been defined by shared milestones. As twin sisters, they have navigated many of life’s biggest moments side by side. Now, they are adding another chapter to that journey as students at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.

While they now sit in the same classrooms and prepare for careers in dentistry together, their paths to the profession were not identical. Kaylee found herself drawn to a career that blends technical skill with personal connection.

“I was drawn to dentistry because it offers a unique balance of science, artistry and patient interaction,” Kaylee said. “I’ve always loved that you can often see immediate, tangible improvements in a patient’s health, smile and confidence.”

Kara’s route was less direct. She initially explored pharmacy before realizing she wanted a more hands-on, patient-centered profession. Encouraged by Kaylee to shadow in dental offices, she quickly recognized dentistry as the right fit.

“Dentistry stood out because it allowed me to work more closely with patients and gave me the opportunity to build long-term relationships and truly impact someone’s quality of life,” Kara said.

Though attending dental school together was never guaranteed, the opportunity developed naturally. Both sisters applied independently and were prepared to attend different programs if needed, making their shared acceptance to UK especially meaningful.

For both students, UK’s sense of community helped make the decision clear. Kaylee said relationships she built while working at Mission Lexington Volunteer Dental Clinic introduced her to the supportive culture of the college, while Kara appreciated the school’s balance of clinical excellence, student support and forward-looking technology.

Going through dental school together has brought both comfort and motivation. The sisters say they rely on one another for accountability, encouragement and collaboration during the demands of the program.

“The biggest advantage is definitely the constant support,” Kaylee said. “Dental school can be overwhelming at times and having someone who understands that firsthand is invaluable.”

“Having Kaylee here has made the experience more manageable and more enjoyable,” Kara said. “It’s not something many people get to experience, and I don’t take that for granted.”

At the same time, they acknowledge that being identical twins can invite comparisons. Both say they have learned to focus on their own growth while using competition in a healthy way that strengthens them individually and together.

Their personalities also complement one another. Kaylee enjoys leadership, advocacy and bringing people together, while Kara describes herself as steady, patient-centered and consistent — qualities both believe will serve them well in practice.

After graduation, both hope to practice general dentistry, continue developing their clinical skills and eventually pursue practice ownership. Whether they one day work side by side again remains to be seen, but they are keeping the door open.

Most of all, they recognize how rare the experience has been.

“It means everything to me,” Kaylee said. “Having Kara here means I always have someone to celebrate the highs with and lean on during the more challenging moments.”

For the Morris sisters, dental school is more than a professional journey. It is another shared milestone — one that is preparing each of them to make an impact in the lives of future patients.
