Cultivating an environment of respect, tolerance, and understanding amongst all members of the UK Dentistry community is central to the mission of our college. In order to support this mission, several students, faculty, and staff members have convened to create the UK College of Dentistry Unity Committee.
The Unity Committee is led by Chairwoman Chioma Brown, and Co-Chairs Miranda Thomas Scurlock and Erik Jarvis. Its purpose is to encourage opportunities for community dialogue and engagement through activities and events that promote a humanistic environment. The goal, Scurlock said, is to bring students, faculty and staff together in fellowship with benefits that go beyond the classroom to impact patients and the greater community.
“If you get to know someone, you’ll value them. If you value someone, you’ll learn from them,” added Brown, UKCD pre-dental advisor.
The Unity Committee consists of three subcommittees:
- Communication: Focuses on education, improving dialogue, self-improvement, and idea generation within the committee.
- Outreach: Creates engaging, fun, and thought-provoking shared experiences throughout the college using passive programming, fundraising opportunities, and community engagement.
- Events: Hosts several events throughout the year to champion a culture of understanding and human development.
