Eight DMD students from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry (UKCD) had the privilege of attending the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) National Leadership Conference (NLC) in Chicago, Illinois, held in late 2022. This is an annual leadership conference that emphasizes skills students will need to be a successful business owner, team leader, or manager in their dental career.
The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry (UKCD) congratulates Dr. Craig Miller on being awarded the Fulbright Specialist Program award. The Fulbright program is a flagship international education exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government to help build lasting relationships between citizens of other countries and the United States. Miller will be working in Israel to help establish a relationship between the U.S. and Reichman University.
The Sam Jasper Periodontal Award was created in recognition of Dr. Jasper’s many contributions to clinical care and education in periodontology. During his 39 years of service in the Division of Periodontology at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry (UKCD), Dr. Jasper remained dedicated to the many students he taught and to the idea of increasing student exposure to the field of periodontology.

Congratulations to Dr. Jennie Ison on being named chief of the UK College of Dentistry Division of Oral Pathology. “As a UKCD graduate, I am thrilled to be home and contribute to the legacy of excellence at UKCD. I am most excited to take a hands-on role in continuing to provide the excellent service and precision diagnostic information that University of Kentucky College of Dentistry Oral Pathology Biopsy Lab is known for throughout Kentucky and nationwide.”
Earlier this year UKCD Senior Curriculum Coordinator David Sacks, PhD, traveled to Turkey, on behalf of the UK Graduate School, to present three workshops on Preparing Future Faculty. While in Turkey, Sacks visited a new dental school at the Nuh Naci Yazgan University to discuss curriculum and the dental schools. “There was a good opportunity to meet with the dean from the brand-new dental school in the city of Kayseri of Turkey. They have about a class size of 70 students, and it is a 5-year program. They just started their third year with it.”
Dr. Dolph Dawson was named chair of the Department of Oral Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. Dawson has been with the UK College of Dentistry, since 1998.
DMD Student Research Fellowship: Through the Center for Oral Health Research, UKCD provides a number of stipends annually for students to participate in research projects. The fundamental goal of these projects is to “create new knowledge” for the profession so that prevention and treatment of oral and craniofacial diseases continues to evolve. Many thanks to the 100 golfers who recently participated in the UK College of Dentistry Alumni Association Golf Tournament. Twenty-five teams competed at the University of Kentucky Big Blue Course for best score and other honors on Saturday, August 20.
