Flying From Chicago is Worth It for Orofacial Pain Clinic Patient

After being treated for a crossbite in 1988 Mary Hennessy-Kukla joined the more than 100 million people in the United States who suffer with chronic pain. After adjusting her jaw and wiring her mouth closed for six weeks, Mary began to feel pain in the muscles in her face. Initially, the pain was mild but over time it continued to get more and more severe.

When Dr. Daria 'Nikki' Stone, associate professor at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, became the director of the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program in Hazard, she realized she was finally in the right place at the right time; where her piece of the puzzle fit in the big picture.  

Global Health Case Competition Tackles Child Obesity in Mexico

Multi-disciplinary University of Kentucky student teams recently vied for the honor of competing in the second annual Global Health Case Competition, which this year is focused on finding solutions to tackle childhood obesity in Mexico. The competition was hosted on the UK campus by the Global Health Initiative, whose goal is to provide advanced research and educational programs for students to improve the health of people throughout the world.  

2016-2017 Student Research Fellowships Available

The opportunity for six UKCD students to receive a $1000 research fellowship is available for 2016-2017. Proposals are due May 6, 2016. Research fellowships provide students a great opportunity to receive mentorship from a faculty member, investigate an important research question, create new knowledge, and receive funding. UK College of Dentistry Doctor Named Kentucky Oral Health Champion

The Kentucky Oral Health Coalition (KOHC) has named University of Kentucky College of Dentistry (UKCD) faculty member Dr. Laura Hancock Jones a Kentucky Oral Health Champion. Jones received the inaugural award at the November Kentucky Oral Health Summit, the first statewide oral health summit in nearly four years.   As part of the UKCD Department of Public Health Dentistry, Jones currently works at the UK Dan A. Martin MD Dental Clinic and Dental Outreach in Madisonville, Ky.  

UK Dental Students Becoming More Mindful

Studies show that mindfulness, the skill of learning to pay attention without judgment to one’s present–moment experience, offers a way to improve a person’s well-being. Mindfulness-based techniques and tools have been proven to provide significant improvement with anxiety, stress, and mood issues. Students in the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry (UKCD) are increasingly engaging in mindfulness training to feel better balanced and address these and other potential problem areas.

Davis Named 2015 Distinguished Alumnus

The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award for 2015 was awarded to Mark Davis, DMD. Davis, a 1967 UKCD graduate, received many nominations from classmates and peers, as well as from his daughter and fellow UKCD alum, Dr. Lea Wheeler. 

Davis Named 2015 Distinguished Alumnus

The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award for 2015 was awarded to Mark Davis, DMD. Davis, a 1967 UKCD graduate, received many nominations from classmates and peers, as well as from his daughter and fellow UKCD alum, Dr. Lea Wheeler. For over 30 years, Davis practiced comprehensive reconstructive implant and cosmetic dentistry in Clearwater, Florida. From 1983 through 1991, he returned to UKCD to serve in a faculty role and lecture on implant and restorative dentistry. 

UK College of Dentistry Students Continue Seal Kentucky Tradition

In support of the Seal Kentucky program, University of Kentucky College of Dentistry first-year dental students visited four elementary schools in the state this fall. The Seal Kentucky program is a community-based dental sealant program for elementary-aged school children at select schools in rural Kentucky. Schools with high free- or reduced-lunch fee program participation, and few or no local dentists, are generally targeted when selecting treatment locations; as these children may experience higher barriers to receiving oral health care.
