Rare Complication Requires Treatment Only UK Dentistry Can Provide

When a patient has their wisdom teeth extracted, surgeons provide information about what to expect post-operatively, as well as potential complications that may occur from the surgery. For most patients, following the guidelines for proper care keeps these issues from arising. Unfortunately, that’s not true for all patients; it certainly wasn’t for Davina Leedy. A wisdom tooth that wouldn’t grow through the gums caused several infections, and ultimately the tooth had to be removed.

Second Cohort of Interdisciplinary Health Faculty Members Named CIHE Fellows and Associates

The University of Kentucky Center for Interprofessional Health Education recently inducted faculty members from across four health colleges to the second cohort of faculty fellows and associates.

UK Dentistry Welcomes Class of 2020

UK Dentistry recently welcomed 66 new students into the dental profession with the presentation of the traditional doctors white coat at a ceremony held on Friday, September 30, 2016 at Memorial Hall on UK's campus.  The College of Dentistry Alumni Association, American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists helped to sponsor the event, making it possible for each member of the class to receive a personalized monogrammed white coat. 

UK Dentistry Travels to Korea to Share Expertise

In September, Dr. Rick Windhorn, assistant dean for Digital Dentistry at the UK College of Dentistry (UKCD), traveled to Seoul, South Korea, to speak at the 618th Dental Company Dental Operational Training. The annual event focuses on continuing education for dental professionals across the Asia-Pacific region, bringing distinguished lecturers to present on a variety of dental topics.

People Behind Our Research

Twenty-five years ago, Dr. Stephanos Kyrkanides began a project during his orthodontic residency studying asymmetries in children born with cleft lip and palate. It was this project that sparked the realization for him that research is crucial, that has been a driving force throughout his career. “It was through the cleft lip/palate project, and others that I came to the realization that research is the main engine in producing new, original knowledge so we can advance our science, both in medicine and dentistry, in order to improve patient care,” Kyrkanides said.

UK Dentistry Alumni Celebrate First African-American Graduate and Faculty Member

Alumni from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry will use this weekend's homecoming as a chance to connect with Drs. Benjamin Nero and Robert Biggerstaff and raise funds for the Drs. Nero and Biggerstaff Diversity Scholarship Endowment at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.  Nero ('67) was the first African-American student at the UK College of Dentistry. He grew up on a farm in Greenwood, Miss., that his grandfather bought after being freed from slavery. Nero went on to have a successful career and practice dentistry for over 40 years.

UK Dentistry Celebrates National Dental Hygiene Month

In celebration of National Dental Hygiene Month, UK Dentistry is reminding everyone that good oral health goes a long way in supporting overall wellbeing. To assist in ensuring people are using the best tools to achieve a healthy smile, on Tuesdays during the month of October, UK Dentistry will be offering free dental goodies, while supplies last. Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)

The College of Dentistry is initiating a new grant program (total direct costs of $100,000 over two years) funded by the Dean, with contributions from the UK Center for Oral Health Research, to enhance the development of basic, applied, and translational research data.The primary purpose is to support submission of a future grant application (R03, R21, R01) by enhancing the competitive opportunity for external research funding.  Deadline for submission of completed applications is December 15, 2016 by 5 p.m. ET. COBRE Seed Grants Selections Announced

Congratulations to below faculty in the College of Dentistry and UK regarding successful competitive review of their proposals for funding during the 2016-17 year through the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence Grant. The selected projects focus on research examining oral health and/or oral-systemic health linkages. The awarded seed grants will assist investigators in generating sufficient data to help develop competitive extramural funding opportunities.  

Grant Pilot & Initial Manuscript Award Recipients Announced

The College of Dentistry initiated a Grant Pilot Award (GPA) program funded at $25,000 and an Initial Manuscript Award (IMA) at $12,500 to enhance the development of basic, applied, and translational clinical research data and to support the production of peer-reviewed publications, focusing on a process to enhance preparation of grant applications competitive for external research funding.  Congratulations to below faculty in the College of Dentistry and UK regarding successful competitive review of their proposals:
