They received their public recognition, award and reward last night. In July 2017, Dr. Ahmad Kutkut became president of the Kentucky section of the American College of Prosthodontists. Since then, he has worked diligently to foster new opportunities for interprofessional collaboration and growth. "My goal is to make the ACP's Kentucky section number one in the nation by making future dentists aware of how a prosthodontist can provide care to patients to improve their quality of life and satisfy their dental needs beyond general dentistry," he said, "Also, I want to enhance collaboration between disciplines to increase the standard of care."
University of Kentucky College of Dentistry students will provide no-cost screenings including limited x-rays and a limited review for tooth decay. The screenings, available to anyone age 14 or older, support student dentists as they prepare for their licensing exam. No appointment is necessary. UK Dentistry’s Dr. Joseph Van Sickels recently traveled to the capital city of Egypt to deliver a keynote lecture regarding orthognathic surgery. The lecture was part of a four-day course offered by the Continuing Dental Education and Training Center at Cairo University.
Most of us don't consider simple pleasures like biting into a crisp apple or snacking on a few baby carrots to be a privilege. For predental student and University of Kentucky senior Joy Andrade, complications resulting from reconstructive jaw surgery meant that every decision regarding eating had to be carefully planned and tightly restricted.
Earlier this month, distinguished University of Kentucky students and alumni were honored with the Torch of Excellence and Torch Bearer awards at the 27th annual Lyman T. Johnson Upholding the Torch of Excellence awards ceremony. Among those recognized were College of Dentistry alumna Dr. Tonda Helton, and fourth-year student dentist Whitney White.
Some of the best opportunities for personal and professional development can be found at the intersection of education and patient care. This was especially true for a group of students from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry who recently returned from a service abroad excursion to Managua, Nicaragua, where they provided treatment for the local underserved population. The trip was made possible thanks to a partnership with UKCD alumnus Dr. Craig Adams and the Restoration Community Church of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Saturday Morning Clinics (SMC) have been a tradition at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry for over four decades. In addition to providing no-cost treatment to children in the Lexington area, this student-led initiative also gives prospective students the chance to visit the college for a firsthand look at clinic operations. Several UK pre-dental students shared their experience from observing the October 21 SMC.
The Dental Trade Alliance Foundation (DTA) and Procter & Gamble selected fourth-year DMD student Sarah Specht as one of this year's recipients of its $5,000 scholarship. The DTA Foundation Scholarships are awarded annually to dental students who display outstanding commitment to community service endeavors and academic excellence in dentistry.
