It only takes one day, one gift to make a difference. Join University of Kentucky alumni, friends, and supporters on April 17 for One Day for UK. The giving day will ensure all College of Dentistry students have life-changing opportunities and the best learning experiences possible. On April 17, the College of Dentistry is raising money for the College of Dentistry Scholarship Fund to help address one of the biggest challenges for many dental students, affording their dental education.
Since the 1980s, the Professional Education Preparation Program (PEPP) has provided an opportunity for students in underserved Kentucky counties, and minority populations underrepresented in healthcare, to explore a career in medicine or dentistry. Although funding changes for the program have occurred, leadership in both the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and the College of Medicine support the continuation of this academic enrichment offering at UK.
Between New Year’s resolutions and many people naturally taking time in the beginning of the year to reflect on areas they may have ignored during the previous year, including personal care, the University of Kentucky Diagnosis, Wellness and Prevention Clinic offers individuals an option to address both their dental and overall health needs.
Dr. David Thornton was recently named associate dean for Clinical Affairs for the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry (UKCD). Previously Thornton served as chief of the Division of Comprehensive Care and assistant dean for Clinical Affairs at UKCD.
Dr. Emily Winfrey was recently named chief of the Division of Comprehensive Care for the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry (UKCD). Previously Winfrey served as one of several team leaders in the division, helping to oversee patient care provided by dental students.
Dr. Robert Frazer has been named chair of the Department of Oral Health Practice in the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. Frazer, who is also an associate professor of restorative dentistry, served as interim chair of the department since May 2017.
By Tony Marusic A $1 million grant from the United Health Foundation will enable the University of Kentucky’s College of Dentistry (UKCD) to launch its “Eradicate Oral Cancer in Eastern Kentucky” project. The three-year project will raise public awareness of the symptoms of oral cancer and its links to heavy alcohol and tobacco use, provide approximately 1,000 oral cancer screenings at local health departments, and help connect patients who need additional care to cancer specialists in Lexington.

The University of Kentucky Center for the Biologic Basis of Oral/Systemic Diseases (CBBO/SD) announces the availability of limited funds through the NIH P30 supported COBRE ”Pilot Grants Program.” This program is designed to support well-defined pilot projects focused on research examining oral health and/or oral-systemic health linkages. These pilot grants are intended to assist investigators in generating sufficient data to be competitive for extramural funding. Applicants from junior faculty and that demonstrate collaboration with oral health scientists are encouraged.
