International Fellowship Program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
The international fellowship program is a one year program specifically designed for dentist who originate from a country where English is not the primary language. The program will provide the student with research activity and exposure to a broad based experience oral and maxillofacial surgery in the United States.
Our educational philosophy is to create a collegial atmosphere which is conducive to learning and challenging. The goal will be to improve research ability and to publish at least one paper in a peer review journal. This activity will be supervised by the faculty in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Additionally the student will be able to observe both outpatient and inpatient oral and maxillofacial surgery.
The international fellowship program is a one-year program beginning on July and ending on July 30 of the following year. Following the completion of the program participants will be given a certificate as an international fellow in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The program will be structured in three parts as highlighted below.

Didactic Component
The international fellow will attend weekly seminars, case presentations, and literature reviews offered by the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Course contents includes orthognathic surgery, history and physical examinations, anesthesia training, pathology training, and seminars on case conferences, interpretation of images and review of cases in pre-operative clinic and quality assurance.
Clinical Component
The international fellow will observe and assist faculty members in the evaluation and management of patients with oral and maxillofacial needs. Approximately 50 percent of the fellows scheduled time will be spent observing the clinical management of patients with various oral and maxillofacial surgery needs. Emphasis will be placed on diagnosis and multidiscipline approaches to the care of patients.
Research Component
The international fellow will participate with faculty in both on going and new projects pertinent to oral and maxillofacial surgery. Together with their mentor/s participants will select a topic and research all significant articles relative to the topic and have significant participation in the writing of the paper to be published. Papers can include primary research, a review article on a topic of interest, or review of clinical outcomes.
Tuition
The tuition will vary with the previous training and experience of the international fellow. It is expected that those with more extensive experience will need less monitoring and therefore will not be charged as those who need more. In some cases the admissions committee may waive the tuition charge for exceptional candidates.
Admissions requirements
Each international fellow candidate must submit a curriculum vitae with an outline of what they would like to learn. In addition two letters of recommendation with a dental school transcript or masters/PhD transcripts should be received by October 1 of the year prior to the beginning of the program. The admissions committee consisting of the Program Director and the Division chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery will chose one to two candidates as the packets become available to start the program for the following academic year.
