Externship Program

Two types of externships in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery are available year-round for rising 3rd or 4th year dental students: Observership and Clinical.

Click on a link below for more detail.

Observership

Externs are accepted for observership only with the following requirements:

Clinical

Externs may work in the clinic or the OR as other students from UK with the following requirements:

  • A letter from the dean of their respective school
  • Emergency contact information
  • Copy of background check
  • Copy of recent drug screen (9 panel)
  • Copy of immunization records/recent TB screening
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Proof of medical malpractice (provided independently by the candidate)
  • Copy of CPR certification

For externs who wish to gain clinical experience through a working externship, the minimum amount of time that he/she should spend at the University of Kentucky is 2 weeks; however, we encourage students to spend a month.

Externs participate in all the activities of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service.  This includes the outpatient clinic, operating room, and emergency room call.  All extern activities are supervised by residents and attending faculty.  The extern will also participate in all academic activities that are required of the residents.  We limit participation to two externs at one time and consider applicants on a first come first served basis.
