Scholarship Spotlight: Lauren

“I’m paying for dental school on my own and that’s pretty scary,” confides Lauren Delpont Morris. “The scholarship I’m receiving is very important to me because it’s helping me pursue my dream.”

Lauren's decision to become a dentist was based on personal experience. She was born without maxillary lateral incisors and this led to many dental problems. The lack of these front teeth also made Lauren feel insecure about her appearance as a child, especially when elementary school classmates teased her. As a result, she rarely smiled or looked directly at other people.

However, after years of dental work, including a bridge, three rounds of braces and implants, Lauren now has the smile she always wanted. She says that being comfortable with her appearance has made a huge difference in her life, and she wants to be able to help others in a similar way.

Lauren shares, “I’m truly honored to follow in Dr. Sharon Butler’s footsteps because she was an exceptional woman. Her love for dentistry, her strong work ethic, and her compassion for others is inspirational. I feel blessed to be awarded this prestigious scholarship memorializing her life.”

“I also feel a kinship with Dr. Butler because I share the same passion she had for serving the people of eastern Kentucky.”

Lauren graduated UKCD in 2015 and went on to study orthodontics.
