UK Dentistry’s Dr. Joseph Van Sickels recently traveled to the capital city of Egypt to deliver a keynote lecture regarding orthognathic surgery. The lecture was part of a four-day course offered by the Continuing Dental Education and Training Center at Cairo University.
Van Sickels’ lecture, which attracted nearly 200 attendees, focused on building a strong foundation for understanding the basics of orthognathic surgery. He discussed a variety of related topics including case planning, conventional and computerized technologies, and the “pearls and pitfalls” of differing surgical techniques.
Attendees also had the opportunity to watch Dr. Van Sickels perform a live surgery. He explained the significance of demonstration, saying “When I watch other surgeons, I learn best. I’m hoping that maybe [the attending surgeons] will see something a little different that I do that they might incorporate.”
Each attendee of the course received a certificate from the Faculty of Dental Medicine at Cairo University and the Nasser Institute for Research and Treatment, as well as 24 credit hours towards continuing education.
