Being a DMD student is a full-time job. Navigating rigorous coursework while managing one’s personal health and wellness can seem like an intimidating task to handle. Luckily, the Office of Academic and Student Affairs has dedicated a week-long series of programming to welcoming new students and equipping them with the necessary knowledge and tools to succeed in the DMD program.
S.M.I.L.E. Week — “Students Matriculating into the Learning Experience” — begins on Monday, July 31 and continues through Friday, Aug. 4.
Academic Advisor Rachel Bolin describes S.M.I.L.E. Week as a chance for incoming students to familiarize themselves with the resources they need to succeed — both inside and outside the classroom
“We not only wanted the programming and outcomes of this experience to be based on student feedback,” Bolin said, “but also to align with the Four Pillars of Academic Excellence outlined in the University’s strategic plan.”
The four pillars — belonging and engagement, health and wellness, academic success, and financial stability — are incorporated in various activities throughout the week. Incoming DMD students will meet UK Dentistry staff, tour facilities, hear from student organization leaders, and have the chance to complete an optional community service project with their peers. Breakout sessions on physical health, financial wellness, and creating a humanistic culture will also take place during the week.
The academic year begins on Monday, Aug. 7 for first-year DMD students. Thanks to the Academic and Student Affairs team, they will have the confidence, resources, and support they need for a smooth transition and to make the most of their dentistry education.
The Office of Academic and Student Affairs is housed in room M-134 of the Dental Science Building. For more information on connecting with staff, visit dentistry.uky.edu/academic-student-affairs.
