An election of one (1) Faculty Council seat is forthcoming. The nomination period will run from October 30–November 6, 2023. The election will run from November 7–14, 2023. Forward all nominations and/or questions to Drs. Mark Schachman or Cindy Beeman.
Membership to the Council is open to all non-administrative Faculty members. Please consider self-nominating or nominating someone else for this important seat.
Faculty Council:
The Faculty Council’s primary role shall be to develop, review, or revise educational policies It shall forward its evaluations to the Faculty. The Council has the responsibility to develop proposals for creation, modification, or rescission of educational policy. After Council approval, the Council is responsible for forwarding such proposals to the Faculty for consideration and approval. Educational policy is prescribed in the Governing Regulations of the University (Sec. VII, A.4). Specifically, the Council’s responsibilities with respect to educational policies include:
- Oversight of the College’s predoctoral, postdoctoral, and graduate curriculum policies;
- Oversight of the predoctoral, postdoctoral, and graduate curriculum;
- Setting the size of the student body in consultation with the Dean;
- Formulation and oversight of the policies for evaluation, academic discipline, promotion and graduation of the College’s predoctoral, postdoctoral, and graduate students;
- Oversight of the College’s catalogue in consultation with the Dean for Academic Affairs.
The Faculty Council shall have oversight over academic committees. An academic committee is any committee that has the responsibility to evaluate the educational program or to develop proposals to create, modify, or rescind educational policy including curricula. The Council shall:
- Recommend to the Faculty that new committees are needed or that existing committees are no longer needed;
- Advise the Dean on the appointment of members and chairs of academic committees – such advice shall not be binding on the Dean;
- Receive and consider for further action recommendations for new or revised educational or curriculum policies that have been forwarded by academic committees
- Receive and evaluate committee reports to be submitted when requested by the Faculty Council.
The Council shall provide a means by which the faculty can expeditiously discharge its responsibility for formulation and oversight of educational policies; shall represent the faculty before the Dean, Associate Deans, Assistants Deans, Department Chairs, and all administrative committees appointed by the Dean and Chairs. The Council also will represent the faculty before the University faculty, Provost, the Executive Vice-President of Health Affairs and all University committees.
The term of office is three years. Council meetings are once per month, unless otherwise necessary.
