Program Description  

Dental professionals play a critical role in supporting child well-being as mandated reporters, clinicians and advocates. This course will build confidence, courage and compassion in triaging sensitive cases that are concerning for child endangerment. By learning more about the structure of and trends in the child welfare system, dental professionals will more effectively protect children at risk for maltreatment. Through case examples, historical perspectives and evidence-based policies, attendees will be equipped to address child maltreatment and engage with meaningful prevention efforts.

Objectives

  • Differentiate cases of suspected neglect and abuse and confidently triage whether to report concerns.
  • Understand the history, structure and trends of the U.S. child welfare system.
  • Compare policies and programs to prevent child endangerment and increase family well-being.
  • Identify opportunities to engage with and advocate for vulnerable children as a dental professional.

Speakers

GreeneColleen Greene, DMD, MPH
Dr. Greene is a board-certified pediatric dentist and Section Chief of Dentistry at Children’s Wisconsin. She is a full-time faculty member in the pediatric dentistry residency program at Children’s Wisconsin. In 2020 she was elected Vice Chair of the Legislative Advocacy Committee of the Wisconsin Dental Association. She serves on the Political Action Committees of the American Dental Association, Wisconsin Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She is a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the American and International Colleges of Dentists. She graduated from Harvard with a DMD and MPH in health management and policy. Prior to dental school she was a high school chemistry teacher in Chicago through Teach for America. She and her husband (Jon) are past licensed foster parents and they have two young children.

Refund Policy

A full refund, less a $50 processing fee, will be issued for all cancellations prior to the course date. Refunds cannot be given for cancellations on or after the course starting date. Please note that a request must be received via email before a refund may be processed. For virtual classes, registrants may choose to receive a full tuition credit toward another course taken within the academic year.

Cancellation Policy

UK College of Dentistry Continuing Education reserves the right to cancel or modify a course when circumstances warrant, including insufficient enrollment. Dates, faculty or course content will be changed only when unavoidable. If a course has been cancelled, participants will be notified and a refund will be issued. Continuing Dental Education cannot be responsible for non-refundable airfare or other expenses in the event of a course cancellation.
